School support staff reiterate their demands to the Quebec English School Boards Association
Support staff working in the English school boards are reiterating their demands by planting 600 We’re here! pennants in front of the head office of the Quebec English School Boards Association. Anglophone communities have specific needs that need to be taken into account. “We have many small locales where the needs are dire, but the resources just aren’t there,” says FPSS-CSQ President Éric Pronovost. “Anglophone students also deserve to receive the services to which they are entitled,” he adds.
Average Salary
The average salary of a school support staff employee is half that of other workers in the province. “At $26,484 per year, it’s very difficult to deal with higher food prices and the cost of living. This needs to change, otherwise the labor shortage will reach record levels in our schools, which will lead to even more service breakdowns,” says Pronovost.
Increase Working Hours
“Staff shortages are a major problem for the members of the FPSS-CSQ. We are calling for very specific measures to improve the attraction and retention of workers. This will require quality jobs with full-time positions, the end of split shifts, the promotion of all support staff jobs and family-work balance. We need concrete action and the active attention of the government to resolve these problems,” concludes Éric Pronovost.
