School support staff reiterate their sectoral demands by planting 2,000 Here we are! in front of the office of the Fédération des centres de services scolaires du Québec. We have specific issues for school support staff that must be taken into account during these negotiations. “We still have seven out of ten people who do not have full-time positions,” declares Éric Pronovost, president of the Federation of School Support Personnel (FPSS-CSQ). He continues: “We need to make positions more attractive so that people decide to work in education and stay there.”
Average Salary
The average salary of a school support staff employee is half that of other workers in the province. “At $26,484 per year, it’s very difficult to deal with higher food prices and the cost of living. This needs to change, otherwise the labor shortage will reach record levels in our schools, which will lead to even more service breakdowns,” says Pronovost.
Increase Working Hours
“Staff shortages are a major problem for the members of the FPSS-CSQ. We are calling for very specific measures to improve the attraction and retention of workers. This will require quality jobs with full-time positions, the end of split shifts, the promotion of all support staff jobs and family-work balance. We need concrete action and the active attention of the government to resolve these problems,” concludes Éric Pronovost.
